Keir Johnston, known internationally for the viral dress controversy of 2015, is now at the center of a criminal trial. Accused of attempting to murder his wife and carrying out years of domestic violence and financial control, Johnston denies the allegations as his trial unfolds. His journey from viral sensation to accused criminal was recently discussed by Tony Brueski and Carol Hughes on their podcast.
"I mean, there's been a lot of viral things since then. This is the blue and black dress and other people were seeing what black and gold or gold and white? Gold and white. Yeah. I saw black and blue. I saw black and blue too," recalls Tony Brueski, reminiscing about the viral sensation that the couple was once known for.
The controversy around the dress color had earned Johnston and his wife, Grace, a spot in the limelight, including an appearance on "Ellen". But the fame had hidden a grim reality, now unfolding in a Glasgow courtroom. Brueski continued, "Keir Johnston, the Scottish man who gained fame for the viral dress controversy…He's facing accusations of attempting to murder his wife."
Johnston stands accused of a prolonged campaign of domestic abuse and coercive control spanning 11 years, leading to an alleged attempt on Grace's life in March 2022. According to the prosecution, Johnston assaulted his wife at their home, isolating her from friends and family, controlling her finances, and at one point, brandishing a knife in an attempt to strangle her.
As Carol Hughes puts it, "this story has taken that dark tragic turn with Keir Johnston facing serious charges related to the alleged attempt on his wife's life." While Johnston maintains his innocence, the evidence the prosecution presents may reveal the dark secrets hidden beneath the couple's public image.
Johnston's journey from internet celebrity to accused criminal has sparked a discourse on the superficiality of viral fame. The hosts of the Hidden Killers Podcast highlight this disparity in their recent episode. "The outcome of the trial will determine the future of Keir Johnston and the impact it will have on those who followed the viral dress controversy," said Hughes.
However, the hosts pointed out an even darker potential outcome. They suggested that if Johnston is found guilty and sentenced to prison, he might receive unwanted attention from women who are attracted to his viral fame. The hosts recalled cases of convicted criminals receiving fan mail and love letters, leading to uncomfortable discussions about the allure of infamy.
Brueski and Hughes’ discussion is a grim reminder of the stark contrast between viral fame and reality. As the trial progresses, the world watches with bated breath, hoping for justice. The tale of Keir Johnston serves as a chilling example of how a life, once at the center of a lighthearted viral controversy, can take a darker turn, and the superficial layer of internet fame can sometimes conceal a disturbing reality.
