It is important to understand that all women have bacteria that lives in their vagina and around their rectal area. The bacteria Group B Streptococcus is one of these bacteria. This is a normal bacteria that lives in the vagina and the rectal area of 1 out of 4 women.

Remember, all women have bacteria, but 1 out of 4 women have this specific bacteria.

The issue with this bacteria is that if the baby goes through the birth canal and this bacteria is positive 1% of babies are at risk of developing either pneumonia or meningitis.

These are two potentially life threatening illnesses. They can cause great harm or even death to your baby. So, as Obstetrician Gynecologists we want to know if you are positive for Group B Strep.

How is a Group B Strep test performed?

You will be laid back on an assessment bed (similar to getting a pap smear) in your OB’s office. Your doctor will then place a speculum in your vagina, then your doctor will swab your vagina and cervix. Then the speculum is removed and the area around your rectum will be swabbed.

A total of three areas are swabbed during this test. The rectum, vagina, and cervix.

When the test results are returned your doctor will notify you if your are Group B Strep positive or negative. If you are negative, GREAT! You can simply notify the nurses that you are Group B Strep negative when you arrive at labor and delivery.

However, if you are Group B Strep positive it is very important that you notify the nurse immediately when you arrive on labor and delivery. The reason for this is we want to treat you with antibiotics if you are Group B Strep positive. We want those antibiotics to be in your system for a minimum of 4 hours before your baby comes through the birth canal.

This is a very important topic for the health and safety of your baby.
