As much as we’d like for everything to run as planned all the time, disruptions are simply an unavoidable part of life. We can’t eliminate them, but we can do more to prepare ourselves for their arrival. If we can take one lesson away from a year of pandemic-induced disruption, it’s that the more prepared we are, the better chance we’ll have to sustain a somewhat normal state of business as usual.

We’ve witnessed the industry-wide benefits that digitalization has provided for companies around the world. Smart factory solutions have helped manufacturers manage disruptions and keep workflow constant, while simultaneously minimizing risk to employees. It’s produced an increased interest in IoT technology, and that interest is only growing as more companies turn towards digitalization.

In this final episode of the “Future-proof with the IoT” mini-series, Jörg Ludwig joins colleagues Heiko Dickas, team leader of the digitalization team, and Sebastian Oeder, the head of the production unit main motors, from the electric motor factory at Siemens Bad Neustadt an der Saale, Germany. He also welcomes back Colm Gavin, Portfolio Development Manager, and Matthias Lutz, Head of PreSales and Solution Design.

We’re finishing up this discussion by talking about how sudden and fluctuating economic conditions, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can affect manufacturers, and how IoT can ease the associated costs and pain. We’ll discuss smart factory solutions that are helping customers adapt more quickly to disruption, and how companies can begin to implement IoT and digitalization throughout their organization. We’ll also talk about the importance of predictive maintenance in controlling the controllable in order to minimize the overall impact when disruptions occur.
