Homelessness apears to a growing issue across the United States. Unfortunately, the same can be said for small rural communities, such as Madison County. In 2023, the Department of Social Services served 247 homeless, which includes single men, single women, and families. Out of the 247 homeless individuals, only 49 were placed in temporary shelters, while the remaining 198 either refused assistance or made their own plans.
Addressing homelessness is not as simple as just putting a roof over someone's head for a night; it's about so much more. In this episode, Samantha sits down with William Nicholson, Community Services Director for Community Action Partnership for Madison County (CAP), and Sondra Shantel, Senior Welfare Employment Representative and Homeless Contact for Madison County Department of Social Services. They discuss homelessness in Madison County, the resources that are available, the process, and the issues.
