Disney has approached Tom Hanks (67) and Tim Allen (70) to reprise their roles as the main characters Woody and Buzz Lightyear in a new "Toy Story" film. Allen revealed this information on "The Tonight Show" with host Jimmy Fallon (49). Disney CEO Bob Iger (72) had previously announced in February that a new "Toy Story" film was in development, but he did not provide details at that time.
With Hanks and Allen returning as voice actors, fans are now hopeful for a continuation of the core story. Last year, Disney released the film "Lightyear," a spin-off focused solely on the space ranger character. On February 9, Allen hinted on his Twitter account that he would be voicing Buzz Lightyear for the fifth time. "See you soon, Woody," he addressed the main character, Cowboy-Sheriff Woody, in his tweet. "You're a sad, strange little man, and you have my pity," he added. He continued to write about his character's picture, "Off to number 5! To infinity and beyond!" The actor has held the voice role, with one exception last year, since 1995.
Can a fifth installment live up to expectations?
The fourth installment was released in 2019 and set a record for the highest animation film opening at that time with a global box office of $244.5 million, as reported by Variety. "Toy Story 3" even won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature in 2010. Whether a fifth installment can live up to this success is questioned. "You wonder if four was too many. Will five be too many?" Tim Allen openly admits to Jimmy Fallon on his show, who immediately responds with a "No." The audience also cheers, indicating that a fifth installment could be highly popular. Allen mentions that one of the original series filmmakers is behind the screenplay. "This could be a very, very interesting way to go back in," says the 70-year-old.
