It's a pleasure to welcome Gail Gazelle, MD, to The Art of Medicine with Dr. Andrew Wilner.

Dr. Gazelle is the author of the new book, “Mindful MD: 6 ways mindfulness restores your autonomy and cures healthcare burnout.” We discussed the incredibly prevalent problem of physician burnout, which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Dr. Gazelle observed that physicians are a set-up for burnout. During training, “comparisons, ratings, and rankings” focus on our shortcomings, not our strengths.

Dr. Gazelle experienced her own burnout and eventually developed effective strategies to combat it. One solution was to change the way she interacted with her life circumstances. She discovered that mindfulness,” the ability to train our minds to focus,” can be enormously helpful to overcome the “negativity basis” of the human brain. Over the last 12 years, she has coached over 500 physicians and physician leaders to help them improve their lives.
