Dave and Rob are talking about diagnostic labels and particularly those for lower back pain

Lower back pain is a complex and multifactorial condition and a specific diagnosis may not reflect the underlying causes or mechanisms for the pain so does a specific label help or hinder?

This is a learning episode where the discussion is a great opportunity to carefully consider what you do as a clinician with the evolution of diagnostic labelling

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The research is now saying a diagnostic label is not as important as previously thought
  • There is back pain that needs a specific diagnosis but this is not the case for the majority of non-specific back pain
  • With non-specific back pain we know it’s nothing sinister or serious and what’s left is a combination of other things
  • Many things can be contributing to the pain and the treatments and outcomes are similar for non-specific back pain
  • Understanding the multifactorial and compounding aspect of non-specific back pain means there are a multitude of things you can do to help yourself
  • The vast majority of patients will be better in 12 weeks
  • It makes sense for us to stop using these labels and be better at explaining

BEST MOMENTS

‘Our previous notion of a single answer to find is a bit immature’

‘A more holistic approach may lead to better outcomes’

‘This is evolving and changing our diagnostic labelling in line with current research’
