As a US Army veteran and physician assistant with experience as a compensation and pension examiner, she explains that gout is a type of arthritis characterized by severe pain, swelling, and tenderness, often occurring in the big toe, and can be exacerbated by factors like diet and alcohol consumption, which are common in those suffering from PTSD due to compensatory behaviors such as overeating or increased alcohol use to cope with mental health conditions. Leah also touches on how these lifestyle changes associated with PTSD can lead to obesity, which is a risk factor for developing gout.
