Recently I was fortunate enough to participate in a scientific study on rates of weight gain at AUT in Auckland, New Zealand.
Over the 8 week study I trained 3 days per week in the lab, and in the process discovered a man steeped in practical training knowledge, quality banter and an impressive selection of anime t-shirts.
I sit down with Colby Sousa, an exercise science student, powerlifter, bodybuilder and coach from Rhode Island.
We discuss strength and muscle research, rates of weight gain, RPE, strength vs hypertrophy and a whole bunch more.
We cover:

  • Why Colby took up academic research
  • What strength research really looks like
  • The weight gain study, what is it, and why did we do it?
  • My experience as a participant in the lab
  • How hard should we train?
  • How often should we train?
  • Study results, did I gain muscle?
  • What’s the best option - gain faster or gain slower?
  • Bodybuilding vs strength programs
  • The efficacy of full body training splits
  • What is RPE? Why is it important? How do we use it?

To help others find this information please consider giving a quick review and rating on iTunes, I will be forever grateful.
