Pokpok. Malandi. Easy. Pakakak. Burikat. Ho. Whore. SLUT.
Just some of the many ways we shame women or queers for going against what one thinks as acceptable codes of sexual conduct. Meanwhile, men who are sexually prolific are called "studs" and the "babaero" is matinik and somebody to be envied.
The shame has gone beyond the mere use of words in person. It has transformed into something monstrous that has taken the form of cyber-bullying in virtual spaces by way of name-calling on social media circles, posting of images with malicious captions, or outright leaking of pictures or videos of the "slut" without their consent.
A lot of us are quick to judge. How many times have we thought - "Kung nagdamit ka maayos, hindi ka mababastos", "Kung hindi ka sana nagpakuha ng video, wala sanang kakalat na scandal." All different forms of victim-blaming. And they all sound convenient - until you find yourself on the receiving end of all the shame.
Studies have shown that slut-shaming is one of the most common forms of sexual harassment that students as young as those in grade school and high school experience. And there have been numerous reports of young teens who were slut-shamed who took their own lives to escape the constant torment.
Angela Baysa, host of Pussy Power podcast, is young and independent, She shares with us how she navigated being shamed early on for being confident and comfortable with her sexuality and knowing what she wants.
So, are you a shamer? Or are you an advocate. There is no middle-ground.
