One huge reason there’s such a leadership gap between men and women in senior positions is that women leave the workforce at a higher rate than men at different stages of their careers.

Like during their childbearing years or when taking a leave of absence to care for an ailing family member.

But did you know one in ten women leaves the workforce at the peak of their skill, wisdom, and experience, due to unsupported menopause symptoms? And it’s costing companies billions.

A study in Canada showed an annual impact of $3.5 billion on the economy from women in their menopausal years leaving the workforce and taking with them all the education, training, and experience companies have invested in them over the years.

In the US, the cost is even higher.

During this phase of life, women are dealing with unique physical and emotional challenges - like fatigue, memory loss, irritability, hot flashes, headaches, and anxiety - that are completely unrecognized and unsupported in the corporate world.

My guest on this episode is Lisa Boate, founder of Liberated Menopause Consulting. She has made it her mission to support menopausal women to remain in the workforce through creating “Menopause-Empowered Workplaces.”

She works with companies and individuals to create awareness around this issue and to implement policies for providing specific health and wellness benefits, flexible working conditions, and more environmental control, so women can continue doing the work they love and are so good at.
