This week on the podcast, I have the pleasure of chatting with Christine Yu, a lifelong athlete, yoga instructor and award-winning journalist whose work focuses on the intersection of sports science and women athletes. Christine’s new book, Up to Speed: The Groundbreaking Science of Women Athletes, looks at the ways in which women have been neglected or misrepresented in sports science research and why we know so little about female physiology.

In this episode, Christine and I discuss:

  • The many benefits derived from participation in sports, especially as they relate to brain function and the mind-body connection.

  • The repercussions of underfueling one’s body, specifically how a lack in nutrients sets off a cascade of adverse physiological reactions in the human body.

  • How the latest science can help women achieve their athletic potential and how proper nutrition is key to overall health and well-being.

  • The impact diet culture has had on women’s bodies

  • What active women need to know about intermittent fasting and ketogenic diets.

  • The reality that – athlete or not – the better fueled your body is, the better your body can perform.

  • How meeting your body and mind where they are in the moment, is key to living well.

I appreciate the ways in which Christine connects sports science research with tangible and easily understood ways in which we can best nourish our bodies so that they can best support us in our day-to-day healthy living.
